CLUB FUNCTIONS
READING OF "CAVALCADE"
The Play-reacling Circle? of.. the Pioneer Club gave a rendering o£ " Cavalcade," by Noel Coward, reiently to an audience of about a hundred members and friends.' The difdculty of depicting a pageant play1 by. a reading only was helped by the introduction of incidental music played by Miss Florence Penney . and the.' old tun«j(.'' ' Soldiers of the King,".as the troops left for the Boer War, the:"Merry Widow?' of later date, up to '^Tipperary" during the scenes of the late war, added considerably to the effect. The stage directions, on which much'of'the atmosphere of the play : dependeSy were, capitally read .by.,. Miss E., Ford.V; The' parts of .' "Eobert" and' A "Jane Marryott": were read by 'Miss lieha Van Staveren and/ Miss : Amy : Kane. respectively, arid, others,'- taking' 'part were Mrs. J. Perry, Mrs. 0. WestohJ Misses A. Saunders, VA.' Newtoni D. Isaacs, I. -Turner, ■H. Westlandj VM. | Buckeridge;- 1\ Penney,' M; 'Brien/^fe. iLoa,- and I.: Sutherland.' -The-"Twenv itieth Century Blues," which is a feature of the last^scene, was;.' sung ;by Miss Margot Buckeridge as'"Fanny;" :Tho. 'stage ' setting'- was • Kept- quite undecorated,; only a large T?nibn Jack appearing. All -present were 'much interested in hearing this masterpiece of. the young playwright for the first ■timo. ■ :
The month's "club night*'; at ihe 3Pioueer Club w.as in charge'- of members of the E.0.W.. Circle'/ who had enlisted the services of Mr. Clement May and a capital '.. programme^ resulted. iMr. May.gave a scone from "Hamlet," 'and' the delightful speech of "Miss jHazy''. about ■ her garden, also several .of A. A.- Milne's .charming children's •poems. The wooing scene from '' Tho Taming.of the.'Shrew.'?,was, given in costume, byVMiss Madge Thomas" and Mr. John Storr. Miss- Evelyn - Goldsmith .contributed a musical monologue, and Miss Tilery! Daniells sang-"--two songs..' The programme.cohp.luded'with the one-act play, "In Honour Bound,'' acted by Mr. Clement May, Mr. John Storr, Miss Lenore Pulsford, and- Miss Eileen Bass.- Very -hearty thanks were extended to Mr. May and his companions for a delightful evening, whioh concluded with supper^ r^— ■
