AT ELLERSLIE

DERBY TO BRONZE EAGLE

COMPRIS WINS CLUB

HANDICAP

(By Telepraph.) (Special to "The Evening Post.") AUCKLAND, Ist January. Glorious weather favoured the third day of the Auckland Racing Club's Summer Meeting to-day, and the racing was again very interesting. Bronze Eagle was the only favourite to score, but several second fancies were successful and the winners were al! well supported. The totalisator handled £47,977, compared with £70,930 on the third day last year. The investments for the meeting to date amount to £155,726 10s compared with £226,534 10s for the first three days last year; a decrease/of £70,505. KING'S KNAVE. Only five started in the Ellerslie Handicap, and backers had no hesitation iv making King's Knave a good favourite iv spite of the fact that he had to put up a penalty of 101b, which is provided for riders who have ridden thirty or more winners in apprentice faces. King's Knave attempted to win all the way, and he just failed, 'being, beaten by a head, by Te Money. ' Specdfast' was a moderate third, and the others were well beaten. King's Knave would have won if his rider had had a whip or spurs, as he loafed in the straight. ANOTHER FAVOURITE BEATEN. Tout le Mond was a hot favourite over. Gay Marigold and Gold Trail for the Midsummer Handicap, but afterbeing up in the lead with Gold Trail to the distance he was very comfortably beaten by the latter, who ran on really well. Scamond made an improved showing to finish third, and there should be a stake for her very soon. Gay Marigold was well beaten, and Change, the other runner, ran very green and was all over the course. ' HURDLES TO ADVANCE CAMP. Consistency received its due reward when Advance Camp, who had run a third and a fourth on the previous days, scored iv the New Year Hurdles. Instead of being taken up to the lead as in his previous . engagements. Advance Camp was kept in behind, while Luminary, Kairuri, and Wiltshire were being made a lot of use of, and.he came away in the straight to win very easily from Luminary and 'Wiltshire, who dead-heated for second. Kairuri was fourth and Goshawk fifth. Russet Moor fell at the third fence when leading. The riding'in the race was far from good, and the winner was the only horse to be at all well ridden. Goshawk hit a couple of fences hard, and this seriously affected his chance. CLUB HANDICAP TO COMPRIS. Gay Crest and Cowpris were the favourites for the Auckland Racing Club Handicap, and they filled the dividend places in reverse order. Great Star made practically all the running from Compris (rails) and Gay Crest (outside), and they had a great tussle in the last furlong, when Compris just won by a neck from Gay Crest, with Great Star a head away third. Seatown came right from tho rear on the outside to get fourth several lengths away. The run of tho race favoured Compris, and Gay • Crest should have won. Gay Crest hampered his prospects by. attempting to. lug in on Compris at the finish, where Gray had to use efforts to keep him off. Great Star should win one soon. BRONZE EAGLE'S' EASY WIN. The. Great Northern Derbj' proved easy for Bronze Eagle in spite of the fact that he had all the worst of the running and was outside a couple, of' horses nearly all the way. Golden Wings., who ran very wide round the first turn and interfered with Bronze Eagle, took up the running after going a furlong, and made play until three furlongs from home, when Heremia assumed command from Bronze Eagle. Once into the straight Bronze Eagle asserted his superiority to win nicely from Peter Jackson, who finished strongly on the outside to just cut Heremia out of second. Fiji was fourth, but the' others were all well beaten. . HUNTINGDON'S FINE PERFORMANCE. Huntingdon, who was a little less fancied than Chitif Jewel, was responsible for a fine performance in decisively winning the County Handicap with 9.11. Chief Jewel, Marmoratc, Grand Review, Whakapara, and Huntingdon were always prominent, and Huntingdon won like a good one at tho finish from Chief Jewel and Whakapara. Juniper finished- on to got fourth ahead of Lord Val and Grand Review. Whakapara had none the best of the running, being on the outside all tho way,' KARAPOTI TAKES NEWMARKET. • Karapoti, at a good price for a horse of his class, showed a. glimpse of his true form in winning the Newmarket Handicap. Karapoti was in front after going a furlong, and was never afterwards headed to win by less than a length from Gay Lap, who was half a length in front of the dead-heaters, Leitrim and Lady Quex. Refresher was fifth and Arisus sixth. The first five horses were very close together over the last furlong, but Karapoti hung on too well for the others. Leitrim finished very wide out, and Refresher just weakened in the last fifty yards. GLASGOW HANDICAP TO SPOON. Opposed by a weaker field than she had met on the previous days, Spoon got to

ilio front after going two furlongs in the Glasgow. Hiuulictip, and she stayed on to win narrowly from Sunny SUy, who was her closest attendant over the hist halfmile. Pomp, after being buclly ■ placed early, finished on to get third, just ahead of Karaiigapai, Silvermine, and Green Linnet. Spoon and Sunny Sky wore both at good prices. Pomp was a shade unlucky, but most of the others had every chance. RESULTS IN DETAIL.
