AT MARTON

ESTEEM WINS CUP

LEISURE BEATS THE

SPRINTERS

Esteem, the first of the progeny of Pombal to score over a mile and a quarter, won the Marton Cup very nicely from the southerner, Desert Song. Esteem ~ and Nightmare made the pace in the early stages, but half a mile from home Desert Song, Ruanui, and Billion rushed past, while crossing the top Nightmare joined issue on the outside. Esteem held to the rails in behind and, with the leading quartet running a shade wide, the Pombal gelding came through to beat Desert Song home by a short length, with Nightmare a length and a half back. Esteem was nicely handled by the Ellerslie apprentice, C. Thompson. LEISURE'S OPEN SPRINT. Leisure, who had made her first appearance in open company at Manawatu without success, showed improvement with a different rider in the saddle yesterday. Equitant led Leisure and Acora across the top, where Arildnui ran up fast, and was actually slightly in front at the distance. However,, the other pair finished the better, the superior condition of Leisure enabling her to win by a neck from Equitant with Arildnui another neck back —the finish of the day. THE MINOR EVENTS.
