FAST STEAMING
RANGATIRA'S PICTON TRIP
The "Union Company's new turbo-elec-tric ferry steamer Eangatira did sonia
exceptionally fast steaming on her Pieton excursion trip yesterday.
About IS6O people were on board. when the Eangatira left "Wellington at 8.11 a.m. for Picton. It was blowing hard all the way, and rain set in shortly; after the ship left Wellington. • However, the majority of the crowd enjoyed the crossing. The run of 52 miles, via Tory Channel, was mado in 141 minutes, at an average speed of 22.22 knots. The return trip was made in fine weather, although it was still blowing hard in Cook Strait. The Rangatira left Picton at 2.47 p.m., and slowed down oS the "Wellington wharves shortly after 5 p.m. She was ber'hed in fifteen minutes after rounding Point Halswell.
The Rangatira made up to 24 knots iv the smooth water of Queen Charlotte Sound and Tory Channel. She completed the return trip of 52 miles in a. little more than- 130 minutes, at an average speed of 23J knots.
On a trial run in England, the Bangatira attained a speed of 22J knots over a measured mile.
