NEW YEAR TOURNEY
RAIN AND WIND
A strong northerly filled the air with, grit for the opening, of'the New Year golf ■ tournament at Miramar. Later a fine driving rain soaked the players, ..and be. came heavy at noon. Afterwards it cleared, but by that time many players were in. There were 110 entries, including J. L. Petley, the Miramar champion, .who was put out in the first round of- tha championship by C. U. Armstrong; J. P. Hornabrook (Masterton), who went out to that steady player, r. Flanagan, in the first round, D. 0. Wliyte, the provincial champion, J. H. Drake, who is always formidable, B. 31. Silk (Wanganui), and 11. A. Black, who is playing very steadily. The weather was against the best of golf, biit the steady players came into their own. The first and second rounds in the championship and group handicaps were played yesterday, the latter being match play on handicap. All arrangements were well in; order, E. C. Butters, the Hiraniar professional, acting as starter, while the secretary (Mr. T. H. Gibson) had everything going very smoothly. The following are the results of yesterday's play:— CHAMPIONSHIP. Both were playing first-rate golf. Hornabrook was out in 37 and all square at the turn, but he put a ball in the ditch at the tenth, and Flanagan, remaining steady, became dormy 3. Both did 765.
