IMMIGRATION

MR. NASH'S ATTACK

Notwithstanding assurances from tho Government that immigration had been suspended, said Mr. Walter Nash, the Labour candidate for the Hutt scat, speaking at Pctone last night, the fact was that immigration still continued, leading to bitter disappointment and uhhappuiess among those who were brought to New Zealand and further hardship to New Zealandcrs for whom already there was no work. During the session just concluded, £11,770 had been provided for immigration, and a further vote of £10,000 wa3 provided on the Public Works Estimates, which also showed that the net expenditure last year, to 31st March, was £33,544. Mr. Nash read an advertisement from the "Glasgow Evening Times," of 27th March, 1931, commencing: "Domestic servants (experienced) aro urgently required in New Zealand; free passages and gift of £2; situations in good households guar-

anteed on arrival; a lady representative of the New Zealand Government will visit Glasgow on 18th March to select suitable applicants." "To send a Government officer round Britain offering free passages and a bonus of £2 to immigrants, while thousands of women in the .Dominion are unemployed," said Mr. Nash, "is the height of iniquity." Quoting from the Official Year Book, Mr. Nash said that between 1925 and 1929 of 57,581 men, women, and children who had arrived as immigrants 29,0-10 were assisted by the Government.
