"WONDERFUL ESCAPE"

AUSTRALIAN COMPARISON

"We, in Wellington Central, have had a most wonderful escape for the last sixteen years, and I hope that we appreciate our good luck," remarked Mr. E. Darroch, Coalition candidate for Wellington Central, last evening. "Had a majority of the SO constituencies in New Zealand followed our example and returned to power a Socialist Government, our position to-day would be worse than that of New South Wales, where the ordinary rank and file of the general public are unable to operate upon their savings in the Government Savings Bank. This stato of affairs has now existed for six months. "We, in New Zealand, would have been, under a Socialist Government, worse off, because wo would have no big brother or father like the Federal Government to appeal to for help. As you know, the Socialist Government in England_ had started to get down upon the savings bank deposits until the National Government stepped in. Are you able to imagine what it would feel like to. go down to the G.P.O. and be told that you could not draw out any of your hard-earned savings? The Savings Bank deposits in New Zealand amount to about 59 millions."
