INCOME TAX EVADED

MAN HEAVILY FINED

Fines totalling £55 were imposed on Bertram William Wilson by Mr. E. Page, S.M., in the Magistrate's Court to-day, on four charges of failing to furnish returns of income.

An official of tho Income-tax Department said that the defendant was in business as a cartage contractor. During the past four years lie had not furnished returns of income, he had not paid any income-tax, and he was not known to tho Department until he was discovered from another sourco early this year. The Department sent him assessment notices and demands, but he took no notice of .them. An inspector of the Department investigated his affairs over the past seven years, and found that the defendant's net income over that period averaged £688 per annum. The tax payable over that period would be about £125.
