CHIEF COOK EASILY

RACE WON EVERYWHERE

Chief Cook, paying a fine price for one of H. Gray's mounts, won the Ruahine Handicap everywhere. He drew in the middle of the line, but was one of the first to leave, and, after leading on to the course proper from Palace, Leisure, Lady Roiiald, Sabatini, Lucky Moment, and Childstudy, always had the verdict safely in his keeping. He came on comfortably to score by a length and a half from Palace, who even more easily beat the favourite, Leisure, for second money. Chief Cook was the second winner during the day. for Mrs. A. M'Donald's stable, and also for Gray. He was a good two-year-old, and should do well over short courses this season ia average company. Palace, who fell in his race on Saturday, haa been unlucky this season in consistently filling minor places, but his turn will come, probably at the New Zealand Cup Meeting. Leisure drew the outside marble but one, and the effort she made under her big weight to get into position early left her without reserve seriously to tackle the leaders over the closing stages. Best of the beaten horses were Childstudy, Lady Ronald, Sabatini, and Eminent. All these are likely to win shortly in company not quite %o good as yesterday's. Others always prominent in the running were Lucky Moment, Weatherstep, and Jenny Diver. Beacou Fire and Moab Queen were finishing on well. Pakitere, solidly backed, was noticed only in the early running. . Winsome Hind, another fancied candidate, was left badly at the start.
