PAREMATA ROAD BRIDGE
(To the Editor.) Sir,—May I thank Mr. Windley for his very sensible letter on the above subject. The need of the Paremata road bridge has been recognised and admitted by the Government, the local bodies, and the public, but up to the present the money necessary for the project has not been forthcoming. But now for the relief of the unemployed large sums of money have to be found and spent as wisely as possible on public works. I ask how could some fifteen or twenty thousand pounds of this money (which I understand is the estimated cost of the bridge and road to Plimmerton) be used to better advantage than by supplying this universally recognised need of a traffic bridge' at Paremata. The undertaking would provide work for some considerable time for a large number of both skilled and unskilled workmen, and would when completed, be of inestimable benefit to thousauds. Should it be deemed necessary to make it a toll bridge to recover the money spent on the undertaking .(and the Walker estate would doubtless be willing to bear some part of the cost), there Mould, I am sure, be no complaint on that score, as motorists would willingly pay a small fee to be saved the long wearydrag all round the Pahautanui harbour which a journey from south of Paremata to Plimmerton aud Fukenia Bay at present entails. In conclusion, 1 suppose that it U only
natural that now a Parliamentary election is •approaching that we shall hear a good deal about the Paremata Bridge, but I siiiccrely hope that those electors whom it concerns will not be satisfied with anything less than to return a member who is pledged to put this matter through, be lie Nationalist, Reform, or Labour. However, it is to be hoped that by the time the election is held the undertaking will be already under way, and if only the right and proper authorities will seize the opportunity now offering there should be no need to bother our Parliamentary can-1 didates with the matter.—l am, etc., WISE EXPENDITURE.
