RETIREMENT OF SIR JOHN

DU CANE

KUGBY, 20th May.

The Colonial Office announces that General Sir John, dv Cane has applied for permission to relinquish for private reasons his appointment as Governor and Commander-in-chief of Malta as from 30th June next, and the King has acceded to his roqucst. -

Permission also lias been accorded him to ictire from tho Army as from tho same date. Sir John ha* been Governor and Commander-in-Chief at Malta since 1927. Before that ho was for three years in command of tho British Army of the Rhine.

During the latter part of the war ho commanded the Fifteenth Corps on the Western Front, and was afterwards British representative with Marshal Foch. . ■
