THE MAYORALTY AND "CUTS"
(To the Editor.)
Sir, —I noticed in Tuesday night's "livening Post" that Councillor T. C. Hislop, who is standing for the Mayoralty, states that there is no reason why the salaries of tho Wellington City Council's staff should be reduced, and the reason which he slates for the same is to my mind so unfortunate that I can scarcely credit any thinking man having the temerity to express same.
It has been so freely stated that to got things back to pre-war conditions it will be necessary for everyone to submit to some sacrifice, . and the problem which every public man has to face is, how to bring-about this equality of sacrifice. In the adjustment, everyone must submit to a cut in salary or income! Why should the council's staS be exempt? Even those of us who unfortunately have had our salaries cut ,are forced to agree that the cut is just and necessary, and it is for all of us to take our part in the adjustment.
I make bold to say . that Councillor Hislop is deceiving himself1 when he says that the cut is not just and is not necessary. The truth is that the cut is many weeks in arrear. City councils, county councils, and- employers throughout the country have been forced to make reductions in salaries, and all of the City Council's staff know that the cut must come to them.
With' regard to Councillor Hislop's guarded reference to the facts regarding his own and Councillor Martin Luckie's term of office on the City Council—why is not1 Councillor Hislop frank in the matter? Why docs he not admit the truth, .and say that he has served on the Wellington City Council'for five years, and that Councillor Martin Luekic has served the city for eighteen'years?—l am, ctC(. ' l ELECTOR.
