BRANCH FORMED'IN NAPIER
A well-attended meeting was held in Napier on Friday for the purpose-of establishing a local, branch of the New Zealand Red Cross.Society. '.Representing the executive at. the meeting were Major Abel, | Mr. Grant, .and Captain M.S. Galloway, "eneral secretary. The meeting was pre-sided-over by-Mr. J.. S. Barton,. Commissioner, and among the gathering were Mr. Vigor Brown, Mayor of Napier, and other prominent citizens. . .. " : . .- . . Mr. Barton referred to the. work which the society' had done' locally, and .touched upon trie national aiid international significance of the Red Cross movement, which now embraced 57 nations. The following telegram was received from Mr. W. E. Barnard. M.P. for Napier, ami was read by the chairman: "Napier should welcome with open arms the Red Cross; Society's offer to make in our town a definite centre of beneficent activity. We owe a deep debt of gratitude to the Red Cross for the help and comfort' it gave us following, the earthquake: it now offers to continue its work at a time when so many citizens are in want and difficulty. I sincerely trust that your meeting will lead to the establishment of a strong and active branch of the society, and so link up with one of the noblest international organisations of our time."
- The meeting unanimously resolved _to form' a branch of the New Zealand' National Red Cross Society, and a strong working committee was elected. An address, illustrated by lantern slides, was delivered by the general secretary, Captain M. S. Galloway. Arrangements are in hand to set up a committee in Hastings to carry on the activities locally on behalf of the earthquake_ sufferers and_ to form a link in a national organisation, which will be prepared and ready to function in times of emergency.
