NEWTOWN SCHOOL

ANNUAL REPORT

Many matters of interest to parents and. scholars are contained in the annual report ol the Xewtown School C'ummittcc.

The report states that the total average roll now stood, at .730, as compared with 757 last year. The average attendance wus G.SS, as compared with 677 for 1030, and the percentage of attendance was 00. Sickness and tho inclemency of (he. weather I during the year hail reduced the average, which, under the circumstances, was highly satisfactory. Out of 72 scholars iviio sat for the pi'olicieney examination,; SI gained passes and lo competency. The dux of the school for 1930 was John Irvine, and the top girl was Barbara Burn. The stall' of the 'school, under the headmaster, Mr. J. l'\ Thuiston, was deserving of the thanks of the parents for their-diligent and efficient supervision both in school'and on 'the'playing-fields. Reference was made to the school libraryscheme. The scheme was working excellently,-: and the percentage of losses was very small. The total cost to the committee for the past year was £2. 12s. 6d, which covered all deficiencies. The committee felt, that the thanks of the parents, were due to the library officials and the school staff, who supervised the distribution' ;of the books. Altogether over 500 books were-on loan. ' , •The report stated that the Parents and Old Scholars' Association' had actively cooperated with the committee and assisted in many ways. The total cost of the annual school picnic was £100. This money had been provided by the association. Iho association had also made a donation ot £20 to the earthquake relief fund. Through the kindness of the association each child who had lunch at school was given a cup of hot cocoa.
