THE WELLINGTON LEAGUE.
A special general meeting of the Wellington Chess League waß held in the chesa room of the Working Men's Club on Wednesday last,' Mr. X J. Brooker (Ngaio) presiding over a large attendance. A number of arrangements were made for the annual opening of season match ("North" v. "South-), which is, as usual, scheduled for the first Saturday in May. It is expected that, given fine weather, the attendance will once more run into three figures, including a number of beginners in addition to the players in the senior and intermediate grades. The 1 ague's three competitions for the 1930-31 season have resulted as follows: (a) A. W. Gyles ia leading in the champion of champions tourney with one game to play; (b) the senior teams' tourney has been won by the Wellington Working Men's Club and Literary Institute; and (c) the competition for the B grade teams was won by the Hutt Valley Chess Club's representatives, who met with gratifying success in their first year. His Worship the Mayor, who is patron of the league, is to be asked to present these three trophies during the supper adjournment. The dividing line between the northern and southern portions of Greater Wellington will be tho same as on previous occasions. It may be added that eight of these opening matches have been played to date, "North" having won four, "South" three, and one ended in a tie (the tally having been 35-all in the 1025 fixture).
