THE KARORI CLUB

The members of the Karori Chess Club, which, was formed on 14th May last, held their first annual general meeting in St. Mary's Parish Hall on Thursday evening, when nine players were present. Mr. A. W ' Gyles, the retiring president, occupied the chair. The annual ■ report submitted by the hon. secretary, Mr. v a. Beggs, stated that the weekly meetings, which were held till the end of October had been well attended. The club s first tourney—a handicap event—was won by Mr W. Kemble Welch, who was formerly a prominent • member of the Masterton Chess Club. A number of stubbornly contested ladder matches helped to noticeably improve the standard ot_ play. The club took part in the Wellington Chess League's B grade teams' tourney, and made a very creditable, first appearance, scoring 15 games, as against the Hutt Valley Club's winning total or 18/ a. The club's president, Mr. A. W. Gyles, won the championship of New Zealand at the Congress which was held m Ro'torua during the Christmas holidays, and received many telegrams of congratulation, his success being very popular. The balance-sheet sshows a small credit balance on the year's working. Thanks are accorded to Mr. G. Wigham, of the Hutt"Valley Chess Club, for donating a handsome ladder, and to the trustees of the Wellington South' Chess Club for the loan of playing material. The report and balance-sheet were adopted unanimously. The election of ofh'cers resulted as follows: Patron, W. Mackay; president, H. I. Bennett; vice-presidents, W. K. Welch and A. W. Gyles; lion, secretary and treasurer, C. H. Beggs; assistant hon. secretary, G. Whitham. These various officers are to act as the club's general and match committees. The following appointments were also made: Hon. auditor, R. K. Harrison; delegates to the Wellington Chess League, W. It. Welch and C. H. Beggß; hon. reporter, P. K. Kelling. A few items of routine business were then disposed of, the remainder of the evening being devoted to practice games.
