HIGH SCORING AT PETONE.

The match between Thistle, and Petone was anything ■ but a. first of the season for the football was of a high order and was of ten ■ - very ' spectacular. The ground,. notwithstanding., the amount .of rain which had fallen recently, was hard and fast, and the. pace of the game was kept up through both spells. . The scoring, Petone 6, Thistle 4, gives an indication of how the ball travelled, and the scores would have been higher still had not the goal-keeping been of the high standard it was. ■ The teams were:— Petone: MTean; Brown, Holmes; Macaulay, Campbell, Hanton, Baistow, Watson. Leslie, May, Craig. Thistle: Stone; Martin, Hopper; M Jjcilan, Lothian, Upchurch; Stewart, Todd, Montgomery, Cunningham, Jones. Mr. N. Brian was referee. Thistle opened the scoring after fast up and down play, Todd racing in to finalise good work by the halves, and left wing. They maintained the pressure for a time, but M/Vean, Brown, and Holmes j were very much on their game. Petone's forwards got going in good style, cross-pass-ing past Thistle's halves. Twice before half-time Leslie, playing a great game at centre, drove home past Stone. 3-1. Early in the second spell Leslie went through to the net again, and Thistle reduced the lead by a goal from a mix-up in the goal mouth, Montgomery giving the necessary touch. 4-2. Lothian added Thistle's third, coming through at centre and driving hard. Watson was Petone's next scorer, 5-3, and after that the game lost a little of, its pace, temporarily. Petone speeded up again on the right, and Stone left his goal unprotected; it was an easy chance for May. 6-3. Thistle went through at centre, and though M'Vean stopped the first shot, Todd beat him with an angle drive to the corner of the net. 6-4.
