SECOND DIVISION

SWIFTS v. H.M.S. DIOMEDE. H.M.S. Diomede were victorious in their match with Swifts at the Kilbirme Stadium on Saturday afternoon, the Diomede winning 3-0. The teams were: — H.M.S. Diomede.—Ellman; Couehman, Woodward; May, Cotton, Connor; Ellwell, Barnett, Leonard, Haynes, and Scott. Swifts.—T. Bradford; Longbottom, Glover; Long, Dainty, MacDowell; Kelly, Bilby, Shankic, Diekson, and Bradford. Swifts kicked off ;nto the wind, and lor a brief period pressed. Couehman cleared, and play' was brought well into Swifts' territory. Following a corner,: Leonard just failed to send the ball home. However, a minute later he dribbled through and bumped the ball past Bradford. Diomede, 1; Swifts, 0. Swifts were forced to play mainly a defensive game, although Bradford and Kelly led a few half-hearted excursions into naval territory. In. such an excursion Couehman cleared rather wildly, but Haynes and Leonard, on gaining control, presented a smart piece of combination work and Leonard scored with a drive. Diomede, 2; Swifts, 0. For the remainder of the first half both sides varied their methods from offensive to defensive. On three separate occasions Swifts were on the point of. scoring, but goalie Ellman proved himself a man. of mettle. Just before the whistle Leonard led his pack down, but he misjudged his drive for goal. The second half developed into a series of attacks and' counter attacks, and there was little to distinguish the play. The navy men settled down to an easy kick and follow game interspersed with periods of bright combination work by Leonard, Haynes, and Co. A delightful pass by Haynes gave Leonard another opportunity, and the result of his drive gave no cause for doubt. Diomede decidedly merited its win, the game ending H.M.S. Diomede, 3; Swifts, 0. Mr. C. B. Fittes was the referee.
