MARIST START WELL.

Marist made an excellent beginning to the season by defeating the redoubtable Hospital team by 2 goals to 1, on the Hospital ground. Neither team was at its best standard of skilfulness, but what, the players lacked in finish they made up in energy. The result was a game that: ,was played at a rattling pace from beginning to end. Marist played rather the better game in the first half, and ■were leading by one goal at the interval. '.The second half was Hospital's, but, although they equalised, they could not take: the lead nor prevent Marist from gaining the third and winning goal. The teams'were:— .' Marist: Turkington; Laracy, Wilson; Burke, Hindle, T. Quirke; Barton, M. Condon, Marshmeut, Quirke, Duffy. Hospital: Ell; Gibb, Thompson; Briggs, ITrewick, Lambert; Marshall, J. Woods, Jeffrey, W. Woods, Standidge. . Hospital faced the sun in the first half. There was a great deal of midfield play >vith occasional attacks by both sides. Marist were the more aggressive, and steady pressure on their part gained them their reward towards half-time. From .a 1 'corner-kick by Barton the ball went to Condon, who placed it neatly into the net. Marist 1, Hospital 0. Hospital pushed strongly from the be-: ginning of the second half, and for several minutes maintained a veritable bombardment on the Marist goal. The Marist defence was sound, and Turkington, in goal, could not have been safer. About half-way through the spell Hospital were awarded a free-kick a few yards outside ■the goalkeeper's area. Gibb took it, and pent in a stinging drive to score the equalising goal. Marist 1, Hospital 1. A short, period o£ dull play ensued, then, unexpectedly, came Marist's second goal. Marshment secured, well out on the right, find instead of centreing, shot for goal, it was a beautifully timed .enort that found the top corner of the not, givmg 3?11 no chance. Marist 2, Hospital 1. Before the end Hospital had one glorious opportunity when the ball dropped behind Turkington in front of an empty goal ; In the rush to put it in, or to clear it, it was sent behind for a corner. At tuU time the score was still 2-1, in Marist s .favour. ' The referee was Mr. T. riant.
