FIND MORE WORK

APPEAL TO FARMERS

An appeal to farmers to find more work for unemployed persons under the special schemes prepared by the Unemployment Board for rural districts was made over the air last night by Mr. P. J. Small, primary producers' representative on tho board. With 31,000 unemployed, he said, there wero some 80,000 people in want. There wore 27,000 youths from 18 to 19 years of age, thousands of whom could not find work, and were dependent on parents who could ill. afford to keep them in idleness. Ho spoke of tho schemes of the board under which farm labour would be subsidised. It must bo understood that no permanent labour must be put off to take advantage of the scheme. Primary producers could bring the Dominion out of its present trouble, said Mr. Small, and the board would assist them to do so. They could grow millions more of root crops, and raise more pigs. Another shilling an acre produced by primary producers would mean £2,175,000. It was not correct to say that tho board had done nothing to assist farmers. There were 1700 men subsidised by the board working in rural areas, showing that the schemes were there if the farmers would avail themselves of thorn for their own good and for tho good of the Dominion. They wero -fortunate in having as head of tho board tho Hon. S. G. Smith, Minister of Labour, who was in sympathy with both workers and primary producers, and would do all he could to assist.
