SOUTHERLIES EXPECTED

' The week-end was spoilt by a-per-sistent strong northerly wind and dull weather. Light rain fell at scattered places in tho wostorn districts, but last night a few heavy falls occurred on the West Coast and high country of the South Island. Arthur's Pass reports having had 550 points, Greymouth 112 points, and Puysegur Point-77 points. While barometers have remained high in the north, a series of slight, low pressure waves have been crossing to the south, of the Dominion, the offshoot of a rather deep depression which has been moving gradually across the southern Tasman Sea. Auckland, with a light northerly on Saturday and. a light westerly on Sunday, experienced fine weather on both days. Wellington had a strong northerly wind and dull weather during the week-end. At Christehurch it was mostly cloudy, and during Sunday morning a gusty northwest wind blew, but later in the day it became calm and oppressive. On Saturday it was showery in Dunedin in the morning but fair though cloudy in the afternoon. Sunday was a dull day with but little wind. The forecast is for moderate to strong north to north-west winds reaching gale force at places in and south of Cook Strait, backing to southerly after twenty-four hours. Cloudy and unsettled weather may be expected generally with rain in most districts -and some heavy falls from Cook; Strait southwards. Temperatures will be mild but cooler to-morrow.
