LEATHER RESEARCH
In conjunction with the British Leather Association a good deal of investigation on the survey of hides has been undertaken by the Department of Scientific and Industrial Eesearch in New Zealand with a view to ascertaining tho influence of processing methods upon the ultimate jquality of the leather produced. Wear tests of locally-pro-duced leather are constantly proceeding, so that the suitability of local tanning practices may be gauged and such modifications introduced as will improve standards of durability. , A limited amount of exploratory wotlc has been carried out on pelt processing and consignments of experimentally treated lines have been sent overseas for trial; in' consequence, it has been possiblo to introduce modified practices in fellmongery methods which have improved tho quality of pelts produced. Realising the importance of pelts as by-products of the meat industry, the Empire Marketing Board has offered a grant of £500 for four years provided ii similar amount is forthcoming from tlie New Zealand Government and from meat interests. The matter is now receiving consideration, and it is hoped lhat something -will be done to- ■ wards improving the quality and yield from pelt- exports:
