In conjunction with the British Leather Association a good deal of investigation on the survey of hides has been undertaken by the Department of Scientific and Industrial Eesearch in New Zealand with a view to ascertaining tho influence of processing methods upon the ultimate jquality of the leather produced. Wear tests of locally-pro-duced leather are constantly proceeding, so that the suitability of local tanning practices may be gauged and such modifications introduced as will improve standards of durability. , A limited amount of exploratory wotlc has been carried out on pelt processing and consignments of experimentally treated lines have been sent overseas for trial; in' consequence, it has been possiblo to introduce modified practices in fellmongery methods which have improved tho quality of pelts produced. Realising the importance of pelts as by-products of the meat industry, the Empire Marketing Board has offered a grant of £500 for four years provided ii similar amount is forthcoming from tlie New Zealand Government and from meat interests.
