SPRINGS IN THE OCEAN

PATCHES OF FRESH WATER

(By Telegraph.—Press Association.) NAPIER, This Day.

An extraordinary submarine occurrence caused by the earthquake was the opening of cold fresh water springs] and the consequent existence of large areas on the surface where fresh water might be obtained. Such springs appeared in a circle round the Pania Eeef, a few miles off the Bluff. The shallowest spot in the vicinity has a depth of six feet; and the reef falls away on all sides to depths of from 42ft to 62ft, and it is here, where the sea is about seven fathoms deep, that fresh water springs were gushing. Some of them were plainly visible, and it could be seen that they were at least two feet in diameter. Somo weeks ago the spot was visited by the Napier harbourmaster (Captain H. White Parsons), the Engineer-in-Chief of the Public Works Department (Mr. F. W. Furkart), and the Director of the Geological Survey (Dr. Henderson). At that time' the water frou the springs was quito fresh,, but it is not known if the springs are still flowing.
