YACHTING

SMALL BOATS CAPSIZE

RACE FOR HOLMES TROPHY

The northerly squalls which swept the harbour on Saturday afternoon were too much for some of the Evans Bay Yacht and Motor-boat Club's centre-board yachts which went out to compete for the George Challenge Cup. There were about a dozen entries, but in view of the adverse conditions the race was called off soon after the stqft. It will probably bo re-sail-ed. The Damfino, Bonzo, and Betty capsized, their crews being rescued without further mishap. The keelers raced for the Holmes Challenge Trophy, ten boats crossing the starting line. The limit boat, the Kawene, held her advantage throughout, but had little- to spare at the finish from the Wairere L, which was giving her 22inin. Next home were the Romp and Marangi in that order. There was a great race between the Viola and the Wairere 11. for fifth place, the Viola crossing the line only lsec ahead. The handicaps, finishing times by the clock, and placings were as follows:— Rawene (52min), 4h 4Smin 45sec 1 Wairere I. (30min), 4b. 49min 12sec .... 2 Romp (30min), 4h 51min 40sec 3 Also started: Marangi (scr), 5h 3min 15sec; Viola (6min), Sh Bmin 19see; Wairere 11. The boisterous weather yesterday resulted in the postponement of the ladies' races for keelers and centre-boarders.
