VICTORIA COLLEGE CREW

The Victoria' College crew for this-year which will contest the annual inter-Uni-versity eight-oared race at Dunedin at Easter is one o£ the. strongest the club has boated to date. Bell (list 71b), the stroke, has stroked, the crew for the last two years, and also rowed No. G in the Wellington provincial crew last year at Auckland. In the season just ended he stroked the Star Club's junior four, which was successful at the Christchurch Regatta. ■ . Gane (list 81b), No. 7, rowed behind Bell in the Star junior four, and also rowed in the Victoria boat last year in the 6 seat. He has also competed successfully in youths' races. MacGregor (12st Sib), No. 6, rowed No. 3 in the college boat last year, and also gained useful experience when he etroked the Star Club's youths' four last season. ' . . , , • DLxon (136t), No. 5, gamed his rowing experience in the Wellington Clubs maiden four tost season. He is a rugged but powerful jar, and his weight m the 5 seat should provide a strong support to tho crew. . , . Steele (12st), No. 4, is new material in the boat. He has rowed for Wanganui Collegiate School against Christ s College in the annual event, and with a little coaching will' be a welcome addition to the crew. Kemp (12st 41b), No. 3, rowed No. 5 in the crew last year, and was also a member of a successful Star Club's maiden four this year. His weight towards the bow should make for a well-balanced combination, with relatively light men in the bow and 2 seats. M'Gavin (lOst), No. 2, has rowed in.this seat in the boat for the last two years, and also stroked the Petone Club s maiden four last season. He is rather light but is nevertheless a strong and efficient oarsman. Grant (lOst), bow, has made rapid strides since he adopted the sport, and has not yet made his appearance in- University rowing. He rowed in the 3 seat of a successful Star lightweight crew last season, but will need a certain amount of coaching before the race. Gooch (cox) coxed the Victoria crew last year at Auckland, when they rowed second to Canterbury. He has also had experience in eight-oared coxing in Australia. The crew leaves for TDimedin on 2nd April, and rows on Saturday, 4th April. Canterbury, Auckland, and Otago Universities are all entering strong crews, and a well-contested race is anticipated.
