UMPIRES BEAT THE PRESS.
The annual match between umius iq»>.scnting the Umpires and the Press was played at the Basin Reserve on Saturday afternoon, an enjoyable game resulting in a well-deserved win for. the Umpires on the first innings. Batting first, the Press had made 97 for four wickets when Cobcroft, the Umpires' captain took a turn with the ball and soon afterwards a "rot" set in. Cobcroft narrowly missed the "hat trick," taking three wickets with four balls. The side was all out for 104 to which total Mummery, contributed 37, J B. Bhmdell 35, and Crisp 20. Cobcroft took three wickets for two runs J. Hutchings five for 03, and C. G. Wilson one for 48. In reply, "the Umpires had lost four wickets for 39 runs, when Cobcroft (who had opened) and Moore became associated in a partnership which won the game. It was not until the total had reached 152 that the partnership was broken. Mdore made 45 and Cobcrott carried his bat for 104 (including seventeen fours and a six). When stumps were drawn the Umpires had more 200 for the loss of six wickets. Trendle took tour wickets and Holstead one. _ At the tea adjournment the captain ot the Press team (J. D. Howitt) extended greetings to the Umpires, and spoke in praise o£ their work in the interests o£ the game. He also paid a tribute to the Wellington Cricket Association's Management Committee, which was represented at the function by Messrs. P. B. Broad (chairman) and A. Viiyney (honorary secrotary). Messrs. L. T. Cobcroft, P. B. Broad, and W. R. Bock replied.
