SEALING A SHAFT
TO SAVE REST OF MINE
ALLEGATIONS IN FUSHUN" CASE
PEKIN, 14th February. There is an amazing discrepancy between the Chinese and Japanese accounts of an explosion at the Fushun colliery on. 11th December. The Japanese ■ mine management claims that there were no casualties, and that the damage was negligible. Chinese reports from Mukden, however, declare that, in, order to localise the blaze, the management- closed the .•iffected shaft, thereby trapping in a! roaring furnace 3000 Chinese labourers anu 30 or 40 Japanese foremen, all of whom perished in the flames. j
Correspondents describe how the relatives of tho entombed miners gathered at the pit-head, tearfully imploring the management to open tho burning shaft.
' The Nanking Government has instructed the provincial authorities to undertake an investigation and organise relief measures.
