DUNEDIN'S OUTLOOK
GLANCE AT WINGATUI CARD
The principal galloping fixture in the South Island on Boxing Day is^at Wingatui, where the Dunedin Jockey Club opens its Summer Meeting. This is not one of the club's main meetings, but it provides for most of the Otago and Southland horses in training, and also draws a few horses from Riccarton. The principal race is the OTAGO HANDICAP, of 300 soys; one and a quarter miles. St. lb. St. lb. Camisader .. 7 9 Hazeldean 7 0 Class is not particularly well represented in the Otago Handicap, but nevertheless the material is present for an interesting race. Celerity 11. is rather an unexpected acceptor, because of the rumours broadcast about her trainer, J. A. Rowland's, dissatisfaction at her handicap, but the explanation follows that the rumours had no foundation in fact. She is not badly treated, considering the quality of her opponents, and she has decided prospects. Three, however, who read to have equally as good chances are Town Major, Night Maid, and Compris, recently promoted hacks. Compris may do the best of them, for his Riccarton form was firstclass, and he appears to provide the main danger for the top-weight. Perhaps the likeliest to succeed are Compris and Celerity 11. The main sprint is the FEDERAL HANDICAP, of 225 soys; six furlongs. St. lb. St. lb. Silver Paper . 913 Caterpillar .. 8 1 . Silver Paper can hardly be ready, but Meadow Lark had a lot of useful racing at Riccarton, and should prove capable of holding the top-weight Royal Saxon, Spoon, Caterpillar, and Mount Boa are good ones lower down, and they will provide stout opposition. A pair who should perform as well as any are Royal Saxon and Spoon. Horses who are in form and who can be expected to show up in the other races are as follow:—Summer Hurdles: Antrim Boy. Trial Stakes: Tippling and Segrave. Salisbury Handicap: Dumblane and Sailing Home. Dunedin Handicap: Fair Weather and Last March. Otokia Handicap: Meprisant and Glenrowan. Burnside Handicap: Kakara and Prancolin.
