The depression which' has dominated the meteorological situation since yesterday became very intense after crossing the Dominion last evening. Some scattered rain fell during yesterday in the western and southern portions of the' South Island, where mainly fresh north to west winds were blowing, but elsewhere the 'wentjitti-^vTfee-fMi^-tlifniph vrtlfii TK •■flialjmi:. noon, however, a change to southerly, winds took place lv the southern half of the Mouth Island, and since then the southerly has extended over the Dominion as a. whole. liain became general with some heavy falls last night, -and many places iv. the South Island have experienced hail. The southerly has been strong generally, and particularly so along the east coast of the South Island.
