AMATEUR ATHLETICS

SPORTS AT BASIN RESERVE

RAIN SPOILS MEETING

Conditions prevailing last evening .it the Basin Reserve were far from satisfactory for the sports meeting held by the Athletic Football Sports Club, affiliated to the N.Z.A.A.A. Rain set in in earnest after the fifth event and the conditions became so bad later that the meeting was abandoned. However, the events that took place were quite up to standard, although the strong north wind slowed up the distance races. The shorter events produced some fairly good times, that of the ladies' 100 yards final being excellent considering that it was run against a stiff .breeze. Miss Battersby won both her heats and improved her time by 2-ssec.in the iinal. Miss Millar was rather disappointing. The junior events attracted good fields, but the times were slow. Waterman (9yds) was too good i'bv Stott, who won his heat in 13 4-ssee. Hall ran well and is a promising athlete. In the 220. yards open handicap, the principal competitors ran out of position. W. Rabbitt, with a handicap of 21yds, romped home in front of N. Glover in 22 3-ssec. C. Jenkins was not np to standard, and was unplaced in his heat. E. Robins, the ex-professional, came third, after Le Grove and Ewart, but was not good enough for the final. Tiie one mile walk was, as usual, a onesided affair, and S. Gudsel won it in 7min 17sec. Bade and E. Day on the limit (150 yds), made the pace for three and a half-laps, but Gudsel came up in his characteristic style and won by 10 yards. Tomkin, another consistent walker, could not catch the limit men. and finished third, 20 yards behind Bade. The mile and the half-mile were run in driving rain; nevertheless competitors made fast times. E. V. Wills, the ex-Quceuslaud-champion, was very narrowly beaten by A. Barclay, who made a wonderful sprint after Wills had passed him 100 yards from home. Wills's times at the end of the .four laps were: COsec, 2min lOsec, 3min 22sec, and 4min 3osec. He lias a very attractive style, but Barclay's handicap of 100 yards was too much for him. The cycle events were not of a high order, although L. Labone showed good form in the senior cycle race (one mile), when he defeated P. Eyton by hal£ a wheel. The junior race was won by D. Eden from Lane, after a slow race. The principal event, the contest for the Heenan Baton, was won by the Olympic Club by at least 60 yards from the Wellington team. University—the holders —did not enter, and consequently interest flagged somewhat. Results were:—: 100 Yards Ladies''-Handicap.l—Krst heat: Mrs. S. Corbett (7yds), 1; Mrs. 1!.
