PURITY OF RACE
"WHITE AUSTRALIA"
In the course of his address to the recent world •congress on • mental hygiene, Dr. Ralph Noble, the mental specialist, represented Australia, described mental hygiene as a biological and social science. He» made a strong plea to the delegates from other countries for the international understanding of Australia's aspirations in its White Australia policy. He explained that by means of its purity of race, Australia would , avoid many of the social problems which had been shown by the statistics presented to the congress to be on the increase in other parts of the world, largely through tho intermingling of different stocks. ■ For instance, Dr. Emerson, Professor" of Public Health of NewYork, had stated that the suicido rate had quadrupled in the United States in the past seventy years, and the divorce rate nearly trebled in fifty years. Aus-. tralia might avoid similar trouble ;if she were allowed to continue to build up a pure race. .
