A LECTURE ON DRAINAGE
(To the Editor.) ! Sir,—l readily accept Mr. Hart'n ttatement that he never intended to give offence and his amplification of the original report. Nevertheless Mr. Hart should realise that the statement of the late Sir Lyon Playfair in 1874 (I have yet to hear that he was a great historical scholar) and other statements of a like nature have lost nothing of their unpleasantness and have not approached any closer to the truth by reason of the lapse of time since they first originated. I have no doubt that in future Mr. Hart will also give credit to such writers as Macaulay, who spoke of the monks as preserving in their monasteries any culture that existed in their day.—l am, etc., cms.
