CLAIMING AND SELLING
NEW IDEA IN ENGLAND
.The first "Claiming and Selling" race jn England was advertised to be run at Xewmarket dn 16th July. This was the Kirtling Claiming 'and Selling Plate for two-year-olds, and fifteen entries were stipulated for. Horses entered, unless struck out two hours before the time o£ the race, were liable to be claimed by any person, except tbe owner, not later than an hour before such time. A claimed horse could not inn in. the race. , A horse might be claimed for not less than the advertised value of the race, plus the entered -selling price. The Kirtling Plate was £200, and the entered selling price the same. The object .underlying the etaheme is to discourage the exploitation of racco merely as gambles. The revived type of "claiming and selling" race is intended to enable an owner to dispose of a horse he does not want without actually having to run it. In "claiming and selling" races, it will be. possible for anyone to claim a horse before, the race is run. In the ordinary type of selling race a claim can be made after a horse has run in the race, and claims are confined to owners o£ horses running in the race.
