MOSSTROOPER'S WONDERFUL
RECORD
The remarkable difference in the severity of the obstacles at Flemington as. compared with those at Caulfield is reflected in the records of the races. Mosstrooper, who won the Grand National Hurdle Race and the Grand National Steeplechase this year, was the second horse to.accomplish- sueb.'--a; feat-- at- Flemington, - the mighty Redleap having achieved fame so far back as 1892. Mosstrooper, as. a result of .his laiest "performances, was1 favourite i'or -the". Australian- Hurdle Race, which race he. won last Saturday. -: For the past two years one horse has won each race, and even then neither of them established a record. Mosstrooper won the Caulfield double 12 months ago, and Sir Alogy, who made a sudden rise to jumping fame, secured each race in 1928. The Sydney representative, Les Paddington, .ridden by the local rider, A. Ferguses, won the same double in 1923, -and the followingl year that old Warrior, Roisel, was also successful. JRoisel was accustomed to almost every inch of the ground at Flemington and Caulfield, but his record over the jumps on each course may be eclipsed only by Mosstrooper, who still appears to have many useful racing years, j Roisel won the Australian Hurdle Race in 1921, 1924, and 1926, and, although in 1927 he did not succeed over the smaller battens, he won over the big timber. A peculiar incident was attached to his victory in the Australian Hurdle Race in 1926. The year before the distance of the race was changed to three miles and ai .quarter and 20 yards, but Roieel and his opponents were started from the seven furlongs post in error, and the distance ac■tually covered was three miles and a half, j less 90 yards. . I
If Mosstrooper should win the Australian Steeplechase next Saturday, he will have achieved something that will take beating; As it is his five victories is a wonderful record.
