CHATHAM CUP

WATERSIDE WIN.

The Chatham Cup fixture between Marist and Waterside, won by Waterside by 3 goals to 2, was a willing contest from start to finish. As the game progressed play became harder, and the game was continually interrupted as the result of injuries. Marist scored first, but Waterside led at half-time. In the second spell, Marist scored only once, and could not equalise. . The teams were:— . Marist.—Connelly; Laraey, Gamble; Wilson, Bird,, Quirke; Barton, M. Condon, W. Condon, Marshment, Cudby. Waterside.—Stone; Abernethy, Bolton; Moon, Haines, Cummings; Cullen, Dunsmuir, Longbottom, Wilson, Edwards. Referee.—Mr. P. Davis. : ■ " The game opened in a bright manner, and, Marist, who were, playing against the wind; scored in the first five minutes. A period of even play followed the kick off, and when the Marist forwards obtained possession, W. Condon sent the leather out to Cudby on the wing. The latter beat the defence, and scored'with a long shot against the wind. Marist 1, Waterside 0. Marist were called on to defend, and half a dozen shots were cleared by the Marist goalie in as many minutes. Two'corners fell to Waterside, the second producing a goal, when Longbottom found the net from close quarters. 1-1. Marist again attacked, Cudby, Barton, and W. Condon being prominent. The : latter shot from a position for which he worked hard, but his shot was well cleared by Stone. Aided by the wind, Waterside kept the ball in Marist's half. ■ Occasionally the Marist forwards broke away, but the defence was equal to the occasion. After a long period during which Marist were called upon to defend, Dunsmuir received the leather close up to goal and made no mistake with an easy shot. Waterside 2, Marist 1. Marist were successfully defending when Waterside again •scored, this time Bolton shooting from almost the half-way „ mark. With the wmd behind it, the shot was too much for. the goalie, who jumped for, but could not reach, the ball. Waterside 3, Marist I.- • Shortly before .half-time was called M. Condon broke away in spectacular fashion, but Stone proved equal to the occasion. On resumption of play Marist forced the pace, Cudby very nearly scoring. A Waterside attack saw Connelly come well out of goal, and then Marist swept down to, the opposition goal, a shot from Barton narrowly missing. In dose play Waterside were penalised, but the shot; taken by Bird, was saved. A second shot was turned for a corner. Marist kept up the pressure, at last a shot from Barton finding the net. Waterside 3, Mai-ist \ i y became hard and fast, each side attacking alternately. In the concluding stages Waterside, if anything, had the advantage, and Marist's efforts to equalise were unsuccessful. Time was called with the score unaltered. -'..;,
