NOT TOO EASY.

It was generally thought that Petoiie would have an easy win, round about half a, dozen goals, anyhow, against Hutt in the. Chatham Cup match on the Petone Jxecreation Ground, and Hutt players more or less agreed with that opinion, but actually Petone won by three goals to n' f Ut had *° play all they for all of them. They outclassed Hutt in forward play, but the Hutt halves and backs •played a splendid defensive game ri»ht through. °. The teams were:— .Petone: M'Vean; Steele, Haine; M'Austuv Campbell, Hanlon; Baistow, Barclay, Leslie, Knox, Craig. Hutt: Webster; Chapman, Gardiner; Land, M'Dougall, Stobbs; Nicoll, Jessup, Brown, Crundwell, Batchelor. Mr. S. Wilson was referee. Petone, with the strong southerly at their backs, opened the game with their characteristic forward passing game, but found themselves up against a surprisingly effective defence, which let very littia play as far as Webster. Leslie1 was well . marked by Chapman, and had no luck With his occasional shots. Hutt, with the wind against them, were not often able to carry play away from their own half, and spoiled their occasional attacks by" balloon passes that as frequently landed conveniently in front of a Petone man. Petone s first goal followed a cross from Baistow, on the right wing. Craig and Knox jumped for it, and Knox had the luck, heading in nicely. At Half-time Petone had a one-goal lead only, and, with the wind in their favour. Hutt's chances looked fairly bright in the second spell. Crundwell early planted a great shot on the bar, and Jessup was very busy, up to a point, his shots not greatly worrying Jvrvean. Petone moved away again, Craig and Knox in possession. Chapman blocked Knox, but Hanlon took a short pass, and banged hard past Webster, down in the mud. 2-0. Hutt were for a long spell strictly on the defence, but' broke away for a corner. Leslie came through, but shot high. Petone gained a corner from Chapman, but Gardiner cleared. They came again,- and Craig shot. Chapman took the ball neatly, but it flew to Knox, bounced from his chest and in to Leslie, who beat Webster. 3-0. ■ Petone continued to press, but made no further score.
