ST. HELENS HOSPITALS
TUTORS' REMUNERATION
INCREASE RECOMMENDED
(By Telegraph.—Press Association.)
STBATFOED, This Day
In reference to a suggestion made by. Dr. Henry Jellett, . consulting obstetrician of the Health Department, that some of the surplus funds of the Obstetrical Endowment Appeal should be devoted to the provision of remuneration for the medical officers of the larger St. Helens Hospitals, Dr. Doris Gordon, secretary of the Obstetrical Society, stated that this matter was discussed at an executive meeting of the society on 21st May. ■ The impression seemed to be widespread, said Dr. Gordon, that superintendents of St. Helens hospitals were at. present'"giving clinical instruction to students without remuneration, but Sir Ijindo.Ferguson, Dean of the Medical School, informed the executive of the Obstetrical Society at its., recent conference that a small salary for teaching services had been paid to the officers of these institutions, fqr the past one or two years. The executive of the Obstetrical Society considered that the remuneration at present awarded was not proportionate to the work these tutors were doing, and' a.' resolution was therefore passed suggesting to the Otago , University Council that out of the increased revenue henceforth available for obstetrical teaching, it would consider increasing the salaries of obstetrical tutors in the northern St. Helens hospitals, which are now being used as additional training schools for senior students.
