The death of Mr. James Ferguson, retired superintendent engineer of the Union Steam Ship Company,. occurred at his residence at Matamata this week. Born in Newburgh, Fifeshire, Scotland, in 1854, Mr. Ferguson served his apprenticeship as a marine erigini eer, and one of his earliest undertakings before going to sea was being commissioned to erect the railings surrounding the monument to Robert Burns in Glasgow. Mr. Ferguson; worked' for a considerable time in the shops of Denny Brothers, engineers and shipbuilders, of Dumbarton. Later he was associated with the Union Steam Ship Company for a number of years. His first shin was the Hero, and he was also chief en-< gineer of. the Rotomahana, the greyhound,of the fleet, and other vessels. He also held the. position of superin-tendent-engineer for some time in Wellington. On retiring from the employ of the Union. Company Mr. Fergusoa joined Messrs. A ; J. Parker arid Company, removing from Dunedin to Auckland. During the past seven years he had resided at Matamata. ; •
