Loughrea, who has been schooling well at his owner's place, looked to be almost a racecourse certainty for the Hunter's Steeplechase on Saturday, but it is reported that he has developed- trouble in one of his feet and is not likely to start at the meeting. 'A bitterly cold south wind was blowing afWingatui this morning, and though the tracks were in splendid condition there was really no interesting work done. Black Duke ran half a mile on the ;tan iv 52 2-ssee, this being about the only gallop against the watch. . When Arikiwai beat Pink Note by two lengths in the Timaru Cup two months ago. Pink Note was conceding the winner 31b. In the Birthday Handicap to be run on Saturday, Pink Note will meet Arikiwai on 61b better terms, and his subsequent form shows Arikiwai to be the much better handicapped of' the pair. Night Rose, the well-grown three-year-old filly by Night Raid from Rose De Val, has arrived from Riverton and was given a couple of rounds on the plough this morning. She looks as if she might require some time to mature before she produces her best form.. Red Heather, ridden by L. P. Hunt, gave a iiue exhibition of fast jumping over' four fences this morning. It was one o£ the best exhibitions seen at Wingatui for a long time, and will bring Red TTeather into favour for the Hunters' Steeplechase on Saturday.
