SOCIAL WELFARE COMMITTEE

The chairman of the Social Welfare Committee of the Wellington Hospital Board (Mr. G. Petherick) reported at a meeting of the board this afternoon that during the period from Ist April to 6th May assistance of various kinds had been given in ,452 eases; at the present time there are 369 cases receiving help. The following is the comparative list of cases (the figures in parentheses being those for the previous month): —Unemployment, 175 (145); desertion or separation, 47 (46); sickness, 156 (156); widowhood, 33 (28); old age, 24 (26); imprisonment, 12 (10); miscellaneous, 5 (4). The cash grants given amounted to £571, as compared' with £468 for the same period last year. It was reported that there had been a considerable increase in the number of rations allowed.
