"STREET" OR ROAD
(To the Editor.)
• Sir,—The Upper Hutt Borough Council lias decided to abandon the use of the terms "road," '"avenue," "terrace/* etc., in favour of "street," and all present roads, etc., are to be officially changed. Thus Pine avenue would become Pine "street," Gloucester road Gloucester "street," and so on. What.is the reason for this desire for uniformity? Does the word "street" smell or sound sweeter to the aesthetic senses,of our borough eb'un-, cillors?
It has also been decided to change the names of certain old roads. For instance, Whitehian's Valley road is to be known as "Bathurst" street. Why this change? Old names generally have some historic significance and association. They stick ', in the mind and bring back memories to many people. Why should they be changed- to satisfy the whims of some people? . . . ' , Changes in designation give rise to, mucn, misunderstanding, inconvenience, and _ expense in that directories, telephone lists, borough, and electoral rolls, address cards, business' forms, etc., are all affected and must be amended. Therefore the onus is on the Borough Council to show some strong reasons for the proposed changes.—' I am, etc.,
