ACCOUNTANT STUDENTS' SOCIETY
A meeting "of the Wellington Accountant Students' Society was held on Thursday last in the1 Accountants'- Chambers, there l^eing a large attendance, including many members of. the. Wellington branch of the New Zealand Society of Accountants. The occasion was a lecture by Mr. G. Spriughall, F.A.1.5., 5.F.A.1., managing director of Messrs. Armstrong and Springhall, Ltd., on the subject, "Mechanical Bookkeeping."
Mr. Springhall .refaced his lecture with a study or the basic principles underlying the use. of machines in up-tq-date businesses, and traced the evolution of tho system from the old "pen and ink"' methods to its present state of mechanical efficieu cy.. "Efficiency js the maximum of accomplishment- with the expenditure of a minimum of effort," was the definition given by ift« lecturer, who stated that the climhtatim of waste —waste time, waste effort, waste materials— was the objective of mechanical accounting. ■ Mr. Springhall went on to describe the various uses of modern bookkeeping machines, aud, following this,; a demonstration was given by Miss Robertson of a bookkeeping machine. A'vote-of thanks was passed to Mr. Springhall and Miss Robertson, and supper was served by the committee.
