A MOTOR ACCIDENT
(From Our Own Correspondent.) NELSON, 16th September. A sedan car with seven occupants skidded m lo Ose gravel when passing anchor-ear .on the Wakapuaka road yesterday afternoon, and shot off the roadway down a four-foot length on to tlie loreslioro, where it capsized, badly damaging the body of the car. The car was driven by Miss P. Sowinan, and contained Mrs. B. Sownian and' five children of the family. Mrs. Sowmaii, the driver, and two young boys, Jeff and Rex, received cuts and bruises requiring medical attention, the other children escaping injury. Councillor G. P. Russell has given notice of the. following motion for the f ( °*J meeting of the City Council:— ih'i.t tho resolution passed by this counc-il on the Sth day of August, 1929, as follows: 'That Stanley crescent be closed to vehicular traffic,' be and the same is hereby rescinded." The Hon. H. Atniore returns to Wellington by the Arahura to-night. The Minister received several private deputations, during the week-end. The Rev. J. G. S. Bartlett, at present locum teneus at the Cathedral during tlie absence of the Dean, has accepted the appointment of the Vicar of Stoke. Mr. Bartlett will take up his new duties in November.
After attending a meeting of the Board of Missions in Wellington tomorrow, the Bishop of Nelson proceeds to Christehurcb for a meeting of the Southern Command Chaplains' Board on Wednesday: The Bishop will spend next Sunday in Cheviot, and returns to Nelson the following Wednesday. • ' Tlio manager of tho Motueka branch-, of tho Commercial Bank of Australia, Mr. Eric Travena, leaves Motueka for Wellington next Thursday to connect with the Ulimaroa for Australia, where he intends spending an extended holiday.
Following reports on the Motueka River encroachment by Mr. C. S. M'Kenzie, Assistant Engineer-in-Chief of the Public Works Department, and Mr. A. T. Waters, Commissioner of Crown Lands, jboth of which recommended the formation of a River Board, at a public meeting at Motueka it was decided .to proceed with the formation of a board. A committee, consisting of the Mayor, Mr. S. P. Clay, and Messrs. J. A. M'Glashen, C. W. Thorp, B. S. Wratt, C. J. Boyes, and,H. Everett, was set up. For failing to 'furnish the Commissioner of Taxes with details of income for the year 1929, James A. Mitchell was fined £2, costs £2 14s, by Mr. T. E. Maunscll, S.M., at the Magistrate's Court to-day. Edward O. M'Guire was sentenced to two months' imprisonment, the warrant to be suspended as long as he pays £3 a week, for being £21 in arrears in respect to a maintenance order. F. Gibbons pleaded guilty to two charges—driving a motor vehicle on Haven road at a speed which in the circumstances might be dangerous to the public, and with failing to stop after an accident in which his vehicle was directly concerned. He was fined £2, costs 10s, on the first charge, and convicted on the second. George M. Hamilton was fined £3, costs £l,!for driving a car at a dangerous speed. Gordon Higgins was fined £1 and ordered to pay 12s costs for failing to have a driver's licence.
The Nelson Rugby representatives de r feated the Canterbury country touring team by 21 points to 15. The Nelson junior representatives defeated Pelorus by 9 points to 3. The senior representative game was the last to bo played in Nelson this season.
Tho following are the winners of this season's Competitions under the jurisdiction of the Nelson Hockey Association:—Men's senior (Newman Shield) championship: Kiwi; Charity Cup, Kiwi; six a side tournament, Kiwi, Junior: Championship, Kiwi; six a side toumamont, Wesley. Ladies: 'Championship, Riwaka and Rewa (bracketed); six a side, Rewa; Greig Cup.relay race was won by Rewa. Boys' schools competition: • Championship, Auckland Point; six a side tournament, Hampden street. : ' .
The Thistle Association football team held the M'Carthy Shield against .a challenge by Hospital, by 4 goals to nil.
