URALLA'S SURPRISE STEEPLECHASE
liUCYROSEWINS KING GEORGE ' ' : HANDICAP
(From "Vedette.")
Those people who were interested in the Great Northern Steeplechase from a purely financial point of view must hay received, the'result with mixed feelings, for Uralla, Vas a rank outsider, whose name was rever mentioned by the majority, although. ■ good word has been said for her here She is an eight-year-old mare by Pied mont from Persianella, owned by Mr. Jatneg'Paterson, who raced Surveyor. She jumped well throughout and had too much speed at the finish for Roman Abbey arid Kawini.. . i ,:..:■■■ .
Lucy Rose kept her part' of the contract for the mares-by wininng the King George Handicap in good style; She>is a small but'solidly-built-three-year-old .filly by Lucullus from Autumn Rose. Her success was well anticipated in the right quarter. There was a good atendance at Ellerslie yesterday for ■ the continuation of the meeting, the holiday crowd being much- in evidence, and every: vantage point was occupied wjien the big steeplechase was ,being run. The track was in excellent order.: The totalisator returns were £89, 758, compared with £94,392 last year. E. A. Keesini;, rider of Merry Mint, who fell, was taken to hospital with internal injuries. Mr. J. Smith, rider of Wedding March, was also taken to hospital. A. E. Didham for'not taking his correct barrier position on Black Duke on the first day was fined £2. , THE HUNT CUP. Odin was at a very liberal price considering he looked to have an odds:on chance on public form. Odin went out to make the pace, and Marita blundered at the second fence, dislodging his rider. Odin led Toumai and Tarrapeen for a circuit with Fikimai next; Terrapeen, , whose -rider had' lost ah iron early in the race, fell at the fence at the seyen-furlohg post.' Odin kept well clear of Tauriiai, whose rider ■was almost off,at the second to last, fence/ to win by four lengths. 'Pikimai -was five lengths back.
. Odin won. full of running, and probably would: have beaten Taumai anyway apart from''the, latter's blunder, which.cost him several ; lengths. > Tafrapeeii was '• going quiteHa'gopd'race when he-fell, but his rider, was" of no use. Without stirrups; The' riderless'Marita was a nuisance to Taumai throughout the ; race.i - ■• RANFURLY HANDICAP. The Te Money-Dark Prince bracket was favourite,, with solid 1 support for Arikitoa, Arihana/Kawainga, and Palmares. Welkne showed, out first, and Arihana led down the back from Prince Val, Welkne, Te Money, .Catonian, Just Nell,, Kawainga, Royal Seagull, and Arikitoa. Arihana led across'the. top and to the turn from Prince Val,.Catbnian, Te Money, Kawainga, QuinBilia, and Arildtoa. ; Palmares and Catapult, were showing up as they straightened up, and- a furlong from home Te Money ran up,-to>Arihana, who was beaten. Palmares came on on the outside to beat Catapult by a neck. Te Money was. two lengths back third, with Kawainga fourth, and then came Pompeius, Sea Cob, Arihana, Catonian, Always, and Bahama. Palmares1 * again was unruly at the barrier and was'slow, away. He was still well back at the turn and finished on in great style to'beat'Catapult, who also came from ; a long way back. Te Money had every chance but failed over the last furlong. Kawainga ran a fair race, arid Pompeius was going .onY well at the end, after being' badly placed early. Arikitoa did not get too good a run. Prince Val showed some pace, but failed to stay. Welkne lost his place early, and was not afterwards prominent. REMUERA HURDLES. King's Guard was a hot favourite, with Kauri Park next in demand, and the winner, Bright Land at a godd price in a email.field. Bright Land went out to make the pace from Boomerday, Cybele, and Kamehameha. At-the stands Bright Land was eight lengths clear of Boomerday, • who was followed four lengths away by King's Guard,' Kamehameha, and Kauri Park together. Boomerday jumped badly at the first fence in the back straight, and King's Guard, Kamehameha, and Kauri Park went in pursuit of Bright Land, with the other three dropping astern. Bright Land just led King's Guard, Kamehameha, and Kauri Park at the last fence, Bright Land coming on to win comfortably by three ; lengths. Kamehameha beat Kauri Park by a.length for second, with King's Guard a head away fourth. Glenotus was a long way. back, next, just in front of Cybele and; Boomerday. The winner scored his first victory over i fences in New Zealand, giving a good display_ at most jump 3. He is an English gelding by Orb and had won over hurdles in the Old Country. • He should go far in this - department of the game. Kamehameha stayed on well. Probably both Kauri "Park and King's Guard were feeling their race on the. first day over the steeplechase course, for their finishing ci-
forts lacked sting. Boomerday^went well over a 'little .over a mile. He requires schooling/ The other two shaped badly.-
GREAT NORTHERN STEEPLECHASE.
Glendowie, Kawini, the Roman AbbeyWedding: March bracket, and, Red Fuchsia were all heavily backed. ; Comical took a toss at 'the first fence, where • Manga.ni led Maunga, Zircon, Wiltshire, Roman Abbey, UralTa,.and; Red Fuchsia, with Ve?a--•tibuß and Wedding March last. Mangam s rider lost an iron : and pulled his mount off at the stand. fence. Maunga and Roman /Abbey led up the till the second time from Zircon, Uralla, Wiltshire, - Red ! Fuchsia,- Kawini, . Vexatious, King * ame, and Glendowie.. Red Fuchsia fell_at the first fence: on .the hill, -and' Wedding March- at the' stone wall at the straight entrance. : At the; stand double Maunga led Roman> Abbey, Uralla, Wiltshire Zircon, Glendowie, and King Fame. Vexatious and Zircon went out at the brusn , fsnce going'out of the straight. Maunga was beaten- going up lthe hill the last time, and Roman Abbey led Uralla, Kawini, Mauriga, Glendowie, King Fame, and Wiltshire: 'Wiltshire was pulled ■up on I the hill. Uralla led down the incline from Roman Abbey, Kawini, King Fame, Glendowje, and Maunga. Uralla came on to win by six lengths from Roman Abbey, who finished better than Kawini, and beat him for Second place by six lengths. King Fame was fourth, and the others to finish were Maunga and Glendowie. Uralla's victory, of. course, was a big surprise, and if she ,had not been coupled with Zircon on the totalisator she would have paid a sensational price. As it was, the : dividend was of good double-figure dimensions.- She went to the front at the vital stage, and, making no mistakes at the last two fences, won decisively. Roman Abbey battled on well and fairly outstayed that good old battler Kawini. Wedding March was ridden, by an amateur. Glendowie was never going right, and put up a poor performance. Wiltshire also gave a bad display, and could not have recovered from his fall on the first day. Red Fuchsia went well as long as he lasted. ■ Maunga gave his best display for, a long time, and was so prominent for three, miles that his chance looked rosy. 1 He faded just when he was expected to go on with it. Zircon was pulled up beaten with a round to go. Vexatious slipped ovevbreaking a leg, a,nd she was destroyed. King Fame surprised most by his .fourth place; , ■ KING GEORGE HANOICAP. The Ohinemuri-Billikins bracket and Black Duke monopolised the betting, Lucy Rose, the winner, being at double' figures. Chelone, who Was started: behind the field, and Marb'e King began Blowly, arid Billikins arid Ohinemuri showed out first. Billikiris and Ohinemuri led down the back from .Vallar, Lucy Rose, .Kingfield, and Whaka, King, with the field strung out over nearly ,al? furlong. Three furlongs from home Billikins and- Ohinemuri were showing the way to Kingfield, Orationy Vallar, Lucy Rose, Valkon, and King Lu. Billikins and Ohinemuri turned for home first from Kingfield and Oration, with ■ Black Duke, Lucy Rose, Valkon, and King Lv, in a bunch next. Lucy Rose came through in the straight to win by two lengths from Black Duke,- who beat Standfast by .three-quarters of a length. Vallar was fourth, and then came King Lv, The Lover, Kingfield, and High Pitch: ••'-•■■. . ' •-■■
Lucy Rose, is not particularly big, but she carried her 8.13 well aiid won decisively. Black Duke did not begin: oversmartly; but finished well. ; His connections Save been unlucky on the Northern trip. Standfast showed that he is a good hack by rattling on' well into third place. Vallar ran an improved .race, and stuck on into fourth place. King Lv ran a fine race from | No. 16 at the barrier. He will not be long. The Lover ran on well, arid Kingfield was always prominent. High Pitch was more prominent at the "end than at any other stage. Valkon showed sufficient pace to suggest his turn is coming very fast. Oration also ran a decent race. Ohine'muri and Billikins were beaten at the end of six furlongs. Merry Mint fell 100 yards from home. Marble King did well to reach ninth place after beginning slowly. PANMURE HACK HURDLES. Prince Lv was a hot favourite, with Lady '.Spalpeen, Golden Wedding, Horomea, and Overhaul well batiked. Prince Lu'was in front at the first fence and led down the straight from Overhaul, Horomea, Lady Spalpeen,' Star Comet, sand Golden Wedding. Overhaul went up and joined Prince Lv five furlongs from home, the next being Lady Spalpeen, Star Comet, and Golden Wedding in a bunch. Overhaul took charge two fences from home from Prince Lv, Golden Wedding, and Star Comet, with Horomea' moving up. Overhaul kept his advantage and won easily by three lengths from Golden Wedding, who beat Horomea by four lengths. Prince Lv was fourth,-and then came: Star Comet and fUmtali at intervals. Overhaul gave a. first-class display • of jumping, and was much too good for this field; in fact,; he went away from Prince Lv as if the latter was of no class. On ■this showing -he is sure to go on and do better things. Golden. < Wedding stayed. on, and Horomea put in a good run over the last half-mile: Prince Lv was a trifle disappointing/ and possibly he was another feeling the effect of his first day's ! race. Lady Spalpeen ran below her first day form. Umtali was always near the rear, but finished well. CARBINE PLATE.
•■; Maori Boy was a hot favourite, carrying the most money of any horse at the meeting, with Otairi at a good price. Maori Boy led down the back from Mon
Star, Master Clements, Otairi, and Lucess. 1- Maori' Boy led to the turn from Lucess, Foxhound, Otairi, Storm Fiend, and Eakanoa Otairi came through in the straight to win easily by three lengths from Glena Bay, who got up to beat Maori Boy by a neck. Storm Fiend was fourth, with Hakanoa and Foxhound next. Otairi won very easily, well handled by his owner, Mr. K. Duncan, son of Mr. W. MA. Duncan. Glena Bay stayed on very well, but it looked as if Maori Boy should have been second. Hakanoa was not too well ridden. Archeria was almost down at the start, and Mr. J. Morns'lost an iron pulling up his mount at the straight entrance. Results:— '
