AT OTAKI

STAKES TO PAITONU

CONSENT'S TAIPUA HANDICAP

For the conclusion of the Otaki Maori Racing Club's Winter Meeting yesterday, the weather was dull but pleasant, and the attendance was exceptionally large, even for a holiday. The track was somewhat holding after a heavy frost on the' previous night, but was .nevertheless in good condition. Racegoers had plenty to interest them, and were. well catered for, close finishes being the order. Paitonu put up a convincing performance in the principal race, the .Ta Timi Kara Memorial Stakes Handicap, and was always a winner. The Mother big event, the Taipua Handicap, went to Consent, who went out favourite, and won nicely. Thetotalisator handled £27,888, making . £40,247 for the meeting, an increase of £4554. ■

Following, are the i descriptions of the races decided after "The Post" went to press:— . ' .'":'■

OHAU HACK HANDICAP,

The first to show put.were Monsogne, Balloon, High' Society;-and .Vindication, Malahat heading the others. Vindication went to the front entering the ' back Stretch, and led Malahat, High Society, Monsogne,. Otaura Lass, Call Again, and Arrow Boy. At the half-mile post, Vindication was just in front of Vinella, with Otauru Lass, Malahat, Arrow Boy, and Call Again following. Vindication and Vinella led to the .straight from Malahat I and Otauru Lass, Mothplarie being most prominent of the others. A great race to the post ensued, MSthplane finishing best to beat Malahat by a nedk. Vinella was lone and a-half lengths further back third, just "in front of Metellusi High Society was fifth ■ "' TAINUI HACK HANDICAP. * .Lucky Bag was-first to show but from Le Champ, Australis, A Golden.Flower, Second ; Thought,' and Austerity. At the half-mile post Lucky Bag was jusf in frontl of Le Champ, with Golden Flower .close iip, followed'by Second Thought and Australis. There was <little between Lucky Bag and Le Champ racing to the straight, while Second Thought and Australis were also close up. At this stage the leaders ran wide,' allowing Australis a run through on the rails. He went on to win by two lengths from Second Thought. Moutoa Wonder finished on well from the rear to gain third place, three lengths behind Second Thought. Le Champ was fourth. '. RACES REVIEWED. Modern jumped better in the Pukehou Hack Hurdles Handicap than on Saturday, but again blundered over a couple of the fences. Tresham was always well placed, but didi not do as well as many expected. Red Bank was forced to act as pacemaker' over most of the journey, a task that did not help him to victory. The form of the other starters was very poor. ' ■ -■-,', Owing, to the large number of runners, the Waikanae,Scurry was run in divisions. The first division appeared the stronger. Grattan jumped out well, and always looked like winning. Warzone again raced consistently, and -fully extended the winner. Nazelle did not run up to the first day's form. Caturia showed some pace for half a mile. \

Kotahi Eka began very smartly in the second division, but failed to withstand a determined challenge' from Werata, who is one of the useful Acre's progeny. Great Lady and Pompadour went, good races. Paitonu stripped for the Ta Timi Kara Memorial Stakes Handicap a better horse forf.his race last Saturday. He was well placed throughout, and over the last halffurlong outclassed his opponents. Tcheka was.made much use of, and he showed courage to fight.off all save the winner Maui again ran well, and had he been better placed •entering the straight must have finished -second.' Briar Root went a good race, but, like Tcheka, a lot of use was made of her.

Fine Acre, who unfortunately " met

trouble on Saturday, was always well placed in the- Rangiura Hack Handicap, and showed exceptional grit to withstand Koyal Black's final effort. Royal Black put,up a big fight. He was asked to concede the winner a big start over the last couple of furlongs, and did well to finish so close. Marjoram, who was quietly fancied, ran much better than on the first day, and Monetize raced consistently. •That Consent should have won on Saturday was shown by the manner in which he responded to his rider's vigorous horsemanship in the Taipua Handicap. First Acre. showed a marked improvement in form. He appeared to have caught Consent a few yards from the winning post, but his. condition^ gave out. For a horse that has raced over middle distances, Royal Game showed a lot of brilliancy. Broad Acre and Dobbin, showed, fair form.

Mothplane, who was not favoured in the runningon Saturday, did not have the best of passages in the Ohau Hack Handicap, but she ran her best race to date, and may be useful with age. Malahat put up a good struggle, and only failed in the last few chains. Vinella ran a creditable third, butMetellus.who came from a long way back to run a close fourth, could not go the fast pace set in the early stages Australis won nicely in the Tainui Hack Handicap, but this in a measure was due to Lucky Bag running very wide at the straight entrance, and carrying right out all but Australis, who' got a lucky run through pexttothe rails. Second Thought again; went a good race, and Moutoa Wonder is fast approaching his best form. Results:— Pukehou Hack Hurdles, of ISO - soys: one :mllo and a half.—4 Modern, 9.11 (A.
