Police cases in the Magistrate's Court to-day were dealt with by Mr. E. Page, S.M. • -. ' ~ Two first offending inebriates who hat! spent the night in the cells were convicted and discharged. Another was fined.ss. A remand until Ist May was granted in the case of Alfred Hubert Callaghan, a labourer, aged 29, Hvho is charged with stealing a suitcase and suit, valued at £8, the property o£ Robert Maree. "I was hard up, and had no work to do," said James Sutherland, a labourer, aged 45, who admitted stealing a pair.pf boots valued at 18 6d, the property of the Monarch Shoe Company. ■ .'"". Senior-Sergeant Butler said that at 11.15 a.m. yesterday Acting-Detective Murray saw the accused on the Glasgow Wharf with something underneath his coat. The detective stopped the accused, and found he had a pair of new boots, which th» accused admitted were stolen. The accused was a farm labourer out of work, "This man has previous convictions,"'. said the Magistrate, when sentencing the accused. . ,";t~, A remand until Monday was granted in the case of Richard Patrick Webster, aged 31, who was. charged with failing to provide adequate maintenance for his wifei■.<• 1 Hector Thomas James Crawley, aged 20, was admitted to probation for- twelve months on a charge■'of. obtaining £8..8s from. Comrie-Smith and Wardle by false pretences. . '. Senior-Sergeant Butler said that on ISth. March Crawley took a car to the complainant's garage to be repaired. He called ! back for it on 22nd March,-Trot as he had no money he gave the complainant an order for £8 Bs, which, he said was due to ' him in wages from "the City Council. The accused did not work for the City: Council. Constable Edwards saw the accused driving the car yesterday, and when questioned he admitted the offence.
