WAR RELIEF ASSOCIATION

The War Relief Association o£ Wellington met yesterday, when there were present Messrs. L. 0. H. Tripp .(chairman), C. M. Luke, A. Macintosh, C. Watson, S. J. Harrison, G. Shirtcliffe, and the secretary (A. Leach). . It was reported that the .Finance Committee had held one ordinary and jvc emergency meetings since the executive committee last met on' 28th March, 1929, and, in addition to its ordinary function of controlling the financial affairs of the association, had dealt with 20 applications for assistance by way of loansr. Of■ these 17 were old applications requiring revision in connection Math amendments to the original terms of repayment, and three were new applications,; of which two were approved and one, disclosing no evidence of war disability, was declined.

The total available 'funds as at 31st March, 1929, were shown as follows*—lnvestments £23,500, current accounts £574 Gs 4d, petty.cash £30; total, £24,10-1 6s 4d. . Accounts amounting to £198 6s 8d were passed for payment. It was reported that the Applications Conimittee had met on' three occasions and during that period of 17 working days 203 applications had been received, comprising 18 claims from men who_ had not. previously approached the committee and ISS applications from others who had done 30. During the period .under review, the Emergency Committee had met on li occasions and had dealt, with 79 of the applications received, 53 claims being disposed of by the Applications Committee, whilst there were 71 applications still under action. The total number of applications received during the period under review, including those submitted to the Finance Committee, amounted to 223. The number of pei'sons who called at the office during the;month was 254, of which 160 applied'for-direct and 94 for indirect assistance. "There has been no alteration in the general activities of. th 6 committee," states the report. "Assistance differing widely in description has beep given to partially disabled soldiers; to others who were discharged fit and subsequently developed a war disability to the widowed mothers and widows of soldiers who fell in action, and in other directions that cannot be referred to within the limits of this report."
