Senior-Sergeant Butler conducted the inquest. Mr. J. O'Shea appeared lor the Tramway Department; and Mr. P. J. O'Regau for the husband of the deceased.
The evidence showed that the deceased was seen walking and running in a diagonal direction across Adelaide road towards Drummond street tram stop. A tram was approaching, arid the deceased struck the tram just beside the motorman's doorway. The motorman of the tramcar, Arthur Onslow Thomson, said that he was .approaching the stop at the usual speed, and seeing no people at the stop was preparing to go on, 'when he saw a woman alongside the tram at the motor/man's door. The woman almost immediately collided with the tram, and he applied the brakes, the tram pulling up in-about one tram's length.
To the Coroner: He was going at about 15 miles per hour at the time
At this stage Senior-Sergeant Butler said that there were two passengers on the tram whose names the department had, but who had refused to make a statement to the police, although they had stated that they Wotdd give evidence if called. The Coroner thought that these passengers might be able to throw additional light on the accident, and he thought that they should be called.
