THI SWELL'S EASTER HANDICAP

MISS RANSOM RETURNS TO FORM

(By Telegraph from "Vedette.")

Strangely enough, the Wairarapa Racing Club's course escaped the rain which visited neavby districts, aiid if anything it •was on the hard side for Saturday's racing. A good crowd travelled to the course by rail and road, and the racing, although there were some upsets of backers' ideas, ■was interesting. The totalisation returns for the day were £23,309, against £17,437 last year.

jJackurs of The. Swell had an anxious moment or so when the. judge hoisted Hign Court's number as the winner of the principal event. This was rectified when the horses came back and The Swell was declared the winner. In the borough Handicap iionogne, who was nearly last, was lirst of all placed third, but when the horses were being unsaddled this was rectified, and Borsalene's number put in that position. K. J. Alackic, rider of Hunting Boy, who stumbled and -fell at the start of the Nursery Handicap, injured an arm and was not able to ride again during the day. A. I'j. Ellis, with five wins in seven rides, ■was the star turn of the day. MAIDEN HACK RACE. Projection and Clarendon carried the bulk of the money, with The Masher, the eventual winner, at a good price. A straggling start saw tiunkissed squeezed back, but she raced round her field inside a furlong and led to the turn from Rcfleeto, Clarendon, and Streamer. Sunkissed was beaten at the turn, and Clarendon and Streamer were doing best of the leaders. The Masher came fast in the straight to win by a short length from Clarendon, with Streamer a length away third. Tunbridge was fourth, and Spearmain, Projection, and Sunkissed next. The Masher, a four-year-old gelding by Gay Lad_ from Astinome, finished very well, and' Clarendon and Streamer both showed a fair amount o£ pace. But for being unlucky at the barrier, Sunkissed would have been hard to beat. Tunbridge was an unlucky runner not too well handled. IMOKAI HACK HANDICAP. Rabbi and Stanchion were solidly backed, with Moutoa Wonder and Roi de Val commanding moderate support. Moutoa Wonder, Dermul, Stanchion, and Volplane showed out first, and Kabbi was interfered with twice in the first furlong. Ladyspear and Moutoa Wonder were in charge at the half-mile from Roi de Val, Dermod, and Rabbi, with Stanchion next. Moutoa Wonder turned for home just ahead of Rabbi, but Rabbi came on to win comfortably by nearly a length from Stanchion, who finished well. Billion was half a length away third, and Moutoa Wonder and Roi de Val right up next. Babbi put up a good performance, for ho had none of the luck of the race, and then won well. Stanchion, however, ■was even more unlucky, but it is doubtful if he would have won anyway. Billion finished on, and Moutoa. Wonder ran a creditable race gut in front. Roi de Val went well in patches, and possibly needed a stronger rider. RAILWAY HANDICAP. Royal Duke was a very hot favourite, with the remainder fairly evenly backed. Quantum, Veronese, Miss Ransom, and Helotis began best, and Helotis led round the top bend from Quantum and Miss Ransom, with Teri and Royal Duke next. Helotis just led at the turn from Miss Ransom, Quantum, and Teri. Miss Ransom took charge a furlong from home, and ridden out beat Helotis by half a length with Teri a neck back third. Quantum was a .good fourth, and Veronese, Royal Duke, and Callanmore followed in that Order.

Miss Kansom registered a good performance even though she just won, for she covered a little extra ground. Helotis showed a return to form, and Teri's effort was particularly encouraging for middle distances at any time now. Quantum was always prominent and ■. was . sticking on well. Veronese dropped back in' th« earlypart and was not afterwards prominent. Royal Duke was a disappointment, but afterwards it was learned he had two plates pulled off in the race. Callanmore failed to show any dash.

WAIRARAPA NURSERY HANDICAP,

Hunting Boy und Courtlike were the favourites in a good betting race. Hunting Boy lost his rider at the start, and Courtlike, Rose Glow, Retract, and Hunting Call lost all chance. Ben Hur, Emotion, Lochmea, Tobaccoland, and Hot Spring began best and they led to the turn. Ex l)ono came through in the straight, to beat Ben Hur by a length and a : half. Emotion was a length back third, and I'obaccoland, Hot Spring, Crash, and Retract were next.

Ex Dono finished very solidly, and score(l in good style. Ho was too experienced and seasoned for the opposition. Ben Hiir shaped surprisingly well, paying a good double-figure dividend for second. Emotion, Tobaccoland. and Hot Spring all rangood races, and Tobaccoland is liable to improve. Crash was finishing on, and Retracts performance way good for a green one.

f EASTER HANDICAP.

The Swell was a hot favourite, with good support for Tcheka, High Court, and Tresham. Tcheka and Black Mint led from The Swell, High Court, and Imperial Spark for about a mile, with Tresham and David Garrick last. The order was still the same at the turn, but once in line for home The Swell took charge, and Tresham commenced his inn from the rear. Ho failed by half a length to reach The Swell, with Tcheka three-quarters of a length back. Imperial Spark and High Court were next.

The Swell, perfectly ridden, won but with not a great deal to spare, and with horsemen reversed Tresham would have scored. Tehekajulled hard in front, but was not disgraced and ran a solid race. He should be a better horse next time out. Imperial Spark and High Court ran fair races, and Black Mint i* coming to his best form. ■ ■ TUHITARATA HACK HANDICAP. Spearmiss, -Imarosebud, Money Mint, and. Billion were, all well bucked. Fallow and Money Mint led Kiriana and Bissac, with Spearmiss mid Imarosebud next, lor five furlongs. Then Fallow and Money Mint retired, and Billion ran romuMo the lead from Spearmiss, Bissac, and Kiriuna. Billion held off the opposition m the run-home and ,y 0) , by two-lengths from Kiriana, who beat ]3i«"tic by ball a lengtn. Inmrosebml was fourth and Spearmiss and 1 allow were next ' . „ Billion, having his second outing on the day, won well after being rushed round his field in the middle stages. K.riana and Bissac both went good races, Kiriana staymg on. Imarosebud needs a sott tiack kpearmisa failed to run on. Money Mint

stopped very badly two furlongs from home.

MARTINBOROUGH HANDICAP.

Uory Mor and Maui monopolised the betting and paid the dividends as backed. Bonogne and Starboard Light led Borsalene and Rory Mor early, but Rory Mor took charge at the turn, where Maui came through- on the rails. Maui could never get to Rory Mor, who beat him by half a length. Borsalene was two lengths back third,.with Inferno, Starboard Light, and Bonogne next.

Kory Mor stayed on very well unti^r His 9.0. Maui was lucky to get the big opening on the rails at the turn, which saved him lengths. Borsalene ran quite a fair race, and Bonogne and Starboard Light raced themselves to a standstill out in front. Inferno ran a fair race. : . - FERRY HACK HANDICAP. For the concluding event Arikinui was a liberal-priced favourite. Reckless and Endorse led Arikinui and Projection to the turn. Arikinui came away in the straight to win easily by a length from Projection, who beat Waterspear by a length. Dainty Ways was fourth, and Glare, St. Melba, and Chief Singer next. 'Arikinui outclassed tho field. Projection ran a solid race for his second outing. Both Waterspear and Dainty Ways were unlucky and should soon do better. Glare is an improver. Endorse and Reckless stopped badly in the run home.
