AT AUCKLAND

BRIGHT GLOW WiNS EASTER

HANDICAP

CHAMPAGNE STAKES TO GAY

BALLERINA

(By Telegraph.) (Special to "The Evening Post.")

AUCKLAND, 30th March. The Autumn Meeting, of the Auckland Racing Club' opened at ■ Ellerslie to-day. The course' was heavy after heavy rains, but the weather was fine, although overcast aud threatening at times. There was a large attendance. The totalisator receipts for the day were £71,750 10s, compared with £86,765 10s for the corresponding day of last year, a decrease of £15,015. Toxeuma was a firm favourite for the President's Handicap, with Queen Arch and Hyde Park also in demand. Toxeuma led early from - Sleepy Sol, Eager • Rose, Desert Glow, and' Hyde Park. Five furlongs from home Eager Rose took charge and led into the straight, two lengths clear of Toxeuma, Hyde Park, and Sleepy Sol, who were several lengths clear, of Queen Arch. Toxeuma and Hyde Park came away at the distance, Hyde Park beating the favourite by two and a half lengths. Eager Rose was a fair third, and Corinax fourth; next coming Queen Arch, The Lover, and Wenday. Toxeuma made a great bid for victory, but Hyde Park was too good at the weights. Hyde Park finished in great style. and is so well that he may win again soon. Corinax was in.' the . rear in the middle stages, and his forward position' at ' the finish suggests air early return to form. He is sure to benefit by the race. Queen Arch did not do as well as expected, and some of the others were not happy in the going. GREAT NORTHERN OAKS.

Prodice was backed down to odds on for the Great Northern Oaks, and she justified the confidence by winning very easily. Kawainga and Mon Star led for about a mile, and then Prodice took charge from Kawainga and Gold Money. There was little between Prodice and Gold Money at the turn, and they were still together at the distance. Then Prodice came away and beat Gold Money by. four lengths. Te Money was eight lengths away third, and Kawainga another four lengths back fourth. Llanore was fifth. "

Lucy Rose and Lhinorc were both fairly well backed, but never flattered the hopes of their supporters at any stage of the last half-mile. BRIGHTON HURDLES. An outsider m Clockwork effected a big surprise in the Brighton Hurdles by winning from end to end. Kilburn was favourite, and there'was also strong support for Kawini and Wiltshire. Clockwork led over the first fence, where Beau Cavalier and Ramblin' Kid fell. Clockwork then went out to make the pace, and led past the stands six lengths clear of Kilburn and Odin, with Wiltshire. next and Kawini last. Clockwork increased his lead to eight lengths along the back, and Kawini began to move up four furlongs from home. Clockwork 1 was four-lengths clear of Kilburn, who was clear of Kawini. So they raced to the straight, arid Clockwork'stayed on to beat Kilburn by two lengths, with Kawini five lengths back third. Wiltshire was a moderate fourth, and Odin fifth. Glenotus fell at the second to last fence. Kilburn was checked after crossing the last fence when coming on the inside of Clockwork, who swerved out and then came in after landing. The cheek probably did not affect the result, although Kilburn would certainly have been closer. Kilburn might have won if his rider had gone after Clockwork sooner. Kawini ran a solid race, and Wiltshire made a fair showing. EASTER HANDICAP.

Vallar was a good favourite for the Easter Handicap, with Bright Glow and Reremoana.also heavily backed. Vallar found

his feet quickest and made play early from Kingfield, High Pitch, and Flying Juliet, with Keremoana heading the others. The field was well strung out at the end of half a mile, and Vallar turned into the straight just ahead of Kingfield, who was two lengths clear of Reremoana, Birght Glow, Flying Juliet, and Mervette being next. Vallar was beaten below the distance, and Kingfield took charge. Then Reremoana, Bright Glow, Flying Juliet, and King Lv bunched up. Bright Glow gradually forged ahead and won by half a length from Mervette, who finished well to- beat Kingfield by a neck. King Lv was fourth, followed by Flying Juliet, Royal Doulton, and White Fan;;. Bright Glow was never further back than fifth, and responded in great style when ■ asked for a final effort. Mervette finished'fast, and Kingfield ran out the mile much better than generally expected King Lv also made a solid showing, and should win soon. Roremoana was going well for seven furlongs, and then his weight, told., Vallar failed in the last furlong, and possibly his trainer was too easy with him in the last week of his preparation.

CHAMPAGNE STAKES.

In a.- field of six Supremacy was made an odds on favourite for the Great Northern Champagne Stakes,-being about £900 bet' tdr backed than the- second choice, Gay Ballerina, Polyxena, Eaglet, and Gay Ballerina, showed out first, I Polyxena leading through" thY cutting from Supremacy, Gay Ballerina, and Eaglet. They raced to the straight in this order, where Supremacy drew level with Polyxena. The two leaders were fighting hard at the distance and came out wide, leaving Gay Ballerina to come through strongly on the inside and win by two lengths from Polyxena. Eaglet was a neck away third, and Supremacy fourth. Gay Ballerina finished in great style and won brilliantly. Polyxena ran a surprisingly good race, but Supremacy failed unaccountably. He looked a winner at the' distance, but stopped badly in the last furlong. MANGERE STEEPLECHASE. The 'Mangere Steeplechase was a good betting race with Star of the East, Master .Arch, and Vexatious the best backed. Star of the East, Uralla, Master Arch, and Vexatious raced in close company until about a mile from home. Star of the East then drew away and won easily by 15 lengths from Vexatious, who defeated Uralla by half a length. Potoanui was a moderate fourth and Master Arch fifth, with Polyphemus a long way back. It was a weak field, and Star of the East made the opposition look cheap. His dashing fencing was a big factor in his success. OMSLOW STAKES. Another good pool on the Onslow Stakes saw Motere, Currajong, and Pellette entrusted with most support. Lady Suzanne and Awamutu began quickest and were the leaders through the cutting from Pellette, Currajong, and Praetor. Awamutu was first into the straight from Praetor, Bennie,. Taurua, and Pellette. In a good finish Bennie did best and secured the verdict by a neck from Praetor, who defeated Flying Prince by a similar margin. Currajong was fourth, followed by Taurua, Pellette, and Motere. The class was not good, and probably Taurua, a full brother to Te Monanui, will eventually prove the best of the lot. Slow to move, he made a fine showing to finish fifth, and should be one to remember. Praetor may have .won with an inside post position. Motere was never prominent. Bonnie was little fancied and I returned a solid dividend. His form has been very moderate, and it was his solidity more than anything that counted. EDEN HANDICAP. Black Maire, Indolent, and Good Boy were best backed for the Eden Handciap. Justify and Envoy were the early leaders from Good Boy, Black Maire, Brampton, and Indolent. After going three furlongs Indolent joined Justify in front, and they carried on the running to the turn, where Envoy, Standfast, Black Maire, and Some Lady were handy. Envoy finished solidly and won by three parts of a length from Indolent, who defeated Some Lady by a neck. Standfast was fourth, followed by Brampton, Thurnis, and Monsogne.

Indolent is usually a good finisher, but he was bustled to the front and did well to hang on like he did. Envoy had a fine run just behind the leaders and finished stoutly. Standfast was near the rear early, and made up considerable ground running to the turn. Black Maire failed under his weight in the going, and will do better on top of the ground.
